Si Spurrier is a comics writer I’ve been following for a few years now; in my year-end roundup for 2014, I praised his web comic, Crossed: Wish You Were Here (illustrated by Javier Barreno) and he’s done excellent work on various titles both super-hero-y and otherwise. (He also writes novels, but I alas haven’t read them.)

NYRSF Issue 334 Editorial: Slipping

Once again we’ve slipped back in the schedule a bit, which is down on me—I’ve had the issue 90 percent finished since before the latest Work Weekend but I just couldn’t get it together to pull it across the finish line. Part of that delay was due to being blocked on this editorial, ironically.

We’re running low on material for upcoming issues. Part of this is that I’ve found it very difficult to send out review copies. Over the last few years, assigning books to reviewers was one of the few things David Hartwell regularly took a hand in, and I’m sure that on some barely conscious level I was flinching away from working on it. But we’ve got a big batch of books heading out the door now—good books! Books that should be reviewed!—and I have faith that they’ll come back as happy insightful reviews.

NYRSF Issue 333 Editorial: A British Story

Recent events have reminded me of an incident from a few years back.

At Anticipation, the 2009 Worldcon in Montréal, I noticed that there was an event each morning called “Stroll with the Stars.” The strolls, the invention of Stu Segal, were simply an opportunity to get a pleasant walk in the area outside the convention center in the company of other fans, some of whom might also be writers, artists, puppeteers, editors, or otherwise professionally involved in the field. The Sunday stroll was an hour before one of my panels, so this seemed like an excellent opportunity to get my brain working through light physical activity and light conversation, and Old Montréal is so lovely one needs no excuse to wander it.

NYRSF Issue 332 Editorial: The Caucus Race

This is the April issue; as I write this, it is June 5. We’ve managed to lap ourselves: I’m putting the finishing touches on this issue after beginning work on the next one. Sigh.

We actually have a plan worked out whereby we will be back to our regular schedule (with the issue coming out late in the month on the cover) by the end of July. It will be somewhat demanding, especially this month—I hope to have the May and June issues both out by the Independence Day holiday weekend—but it’s achievable.

Well, we’re back.

We didn’t intend to take a break after the Hartwell Memorial issue, which was complete in February (though released in mid-March). But I underestimated how much David’s death would hover over the magazine, leading me into a cycle of guilt-avoidance where any time I tried to sit down to do the work of finishing this issue, my brain found every possible excuse to not get anything done. But we’re here now with what I think is a simply terrific issue.

I don’t know that I’m completely out of that cycle yet, but I will do everything I can to fill the gap and return the magazine to its monthly schedule.
